Chapter Seven

I’m sitting on the couch in the living room with Blot still hugged in my arms. I try to calm my racing heart. It’s still raining, but the storm has passed by. Thunder sounds in the distance, quieter than before.

What happened upstairs? My brain is numb. Did I really see Emma in the window, or was my imagination running wild because of the storm and that stupid Ouija board?

Blot purrs when Rosie enters the room, carrying two steaming cups of tea.

“Here.” She sits in the arm chair beside the couch and places both mugs on the coffee table. “This might help calm your nerves. Are you okay?”

“Thanks. And I don’t know.” I let go of Blot. He curls up beside me and begins to lick his paws. I pull my knees to my chest and rest my chin on them. “Did you see her too? Or am I nuts?”

Rosie nods, a smile twisting on her lips. “I saw her. Clear as day. She was nothing like the man I saw hovering near my ceiling. He was faint, barely visible. She was—well, she was clearly there!”

I groan and close my eyes. “What does she want?”

“She knows something about your grandma’s necklace. I wish Blot hadn’t scared her off. We didn’t get the full message.” Rosie grins gleefully as she picks up her tea. “This is so cool. We have a real-life paranormal mystery on our hands.”

“But why would she care about my grandma’s necklace?” I ask. “She hardly even knew me, much less my grandma.”

Rosie shrugs and takes a sip of the steaming liquid in her cup. “Maybe it’s not your grandma’s. What if Emma had a locket too? Or maybe she’s here on other business, but saw the necklace and is trying to help you too? We should do some digging to find out.”

I give her a sidelong look. This is not how I want to spend my summer. I want to read books, ride my bike, and lay by the pool. The last thing I want is a ghost hunting mission. I didn’t even entertain the thought that spirits were real until tonight.

Rosie cocks her head and gives me a knowing look. “She isn’t going to leave you alone until this is resolved. Besides that, won’t it be worth it if we find your grandma’s locket?”

I frown, but give her a nod. “I guess so. But what do we do next?”

“We could get the Ouija board out—”

“No,” I cut her off. “I’m not doing that again. I’m still freaked out.”

Rosie places her tea on the coffee table and shrugs. “Okay. If you don’t want to, that’s fine. I get it. That was pretty scary. But it was cool too.”

I breathe a sigh of relief. “You know, I bet we’re the only two kids in our class who have seen a real ghost.”

Rosie grins. “I bet Aubrey and all those snobby friends of hers will be so jealous. I wonder if there’s a way to ask Emma to haunt her? She could give her a little scare.
